Come and Meet Our Staff!
Thom grew up in Greencastle, IN, near Indianapolis. He’s joyfully married to his wife Denise since July of 2000. He has two grown kids, Kathy and Thomas, in the Pittsburgh, PA area. Unfortunately he doesn’t get to see them as much as he’d like. A man with a boisterous laugh, he’s a self-professed couch potato when he’s not working, but loves to read for pleasure, watch movies with his wife on their Friday night “date night”, and be outdoors when he can.
Did you know? From the age of 10 to 20 he worked in his parent’s auto body shop in Greencastle. His first career ambition was to be an archaeologist. His major in college, however, was Vocal Performance. He was a singer, actor and dancer in over 50 plays, musicals and operas. He plays all the brass instruments except tuba. When it comes to entertainment, Thom’s all-time favorite is “The Simpsons” TV show, and Homer is his hero! Before you judge him too much, he says that the Simpsons are the most church-going family on television! If he’s not watching “The Simpsons”, he watches NFL Football, anything sci-fi, adventure or comedy. Being a former performer, he loves all singing and dancing talent contest shows.
Favorite movies: Braveheart, Avatar, and other good over evil movies. The Lord of the Rings is one of his favorite books, but the Bible tops even Frodo. If he could meet anyone one day Jesus is his top choice, of course, followed by Paul, Moses, Peter, Gideon, and his great-grandpa, whom he’s named after. Pizza, chicken, ice cream, breakfast, and pork are his favorite foods, but he has a cookie addiction that can’t be contained.
Proudest achievements: Raising his kids, helping church’s grow, and being a pretty good singer, actor and dancer at one time!
Ministry: He’s been a Disciple all his life, having served as a Junior Deacon, Junior Elder, youth worker, choir director, Associate Minister, evangelism director at the Division of Homeland Ministry of our denomination for four years, and solo pastor. A man of diverse talents, at times he had to supplement his minister’s wages by working two jobs. Sometimes as a book store clerk, a trucking company dispatcher, and for seven years he was a substitute teacher. He’s been the Senior Minister of Central Christian Church since September of 2007. He also leads the mentoring group for licensed Disciples pastors around San Antonio in the Blue Bonnet Area of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He teaches 10-15 licensed ministers to help them prepare for ministry. Come spring of 2010, he’ll be the presenter for the Texas Bible Chair in the SW Region.
Education: Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, DePauw University in Greencastle, IN, 1978; Master of Divinity from Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, IN, 1982.
Published works: The Prescription for Growth Series; A Disciples Path, a series of Easter plays, and numerous magazine and newspaper articles.

Thom Albin, Senior Minister
Email: tpalb2@hotmail.com
Nelson Torres, Associate Minister
Email: nelson@nelsontorres.com
Nelson comes to us from the beautiful “Isla del Encanto” (The Enchanted Island) of Puerto Rico. Yauco is his hometown, located in the southern coast by the Caribbean Sea. His lovely wife, Roxana, Central’s Children’s Minister, is from Honduras in Central America. They have three great kids. Alessandra is 22, Melanie 15, and Nelson is 8 years old. His family brings him great joy, and he loves to spend time with them.
Did you know? A man of what seems to be endless energy, it’s surprising to learn that Nelson’s favorite hobbies are playing chess and reading. His favorite book is The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy. Not much of a TV-viewer, he does like watching the news and James Bond and Clint Eastwood movies. In his precious spare time, Nelson is a Real Estate broker. If you’re looking to buy or sell a home, Thom and Denise highly recommend his services!
His favorite foods are Puerto Rican foods, or Heaven’s official food, he claims. His likes: Arroz con Gandules, pasteles y carne asada (rice with pigeon peas, savory “tamal-like” cakes wrapped in banana leaves) and grilled beef. Nelson said that Puerto Rican food is among the worlds most flavorful, with roots in Spain, African, and Taino cooking.
Speaking of Puerto Rico, he said they call the United States “The Mainland”. A trip to “The Mainland” is a trip up north. He always gets confused when talking about the southern states. To him Florida is north, not south. So, if you are from the south, then Nelson is from the “deep, deep south”.
Proudest achievement: Nelson said that Roxana is his life-time achievement award. He’s also very proud of his 20 years of military service to our nation.
Ministry: Born and raised Catholic, and having attended Catholic schools all his life, he was offered a scholarship to attend seminary to become a priest. He said he declined because he was in search of Roxana. If he could meet anyone of his choosing, it would be Roxana’s grandmother. She is the one who brought Roxana to Jesus Christ, and also to him. Nelson became a newborn Christian on July 31, 2002. He said, “I have a real passion for Jesus. I feel proud and hopeful of who I am in Him. I love reading the Bible and discovering God’s promises and purpose for my life.”
Nelson first started serving Central Christian Church as the Minister of Hispanic Ministries in 2004. In the summer of 2009, Nelson became Central’s Associate Minister. When he’s not assisting Thom, or his wife Roxana with the Children’s Ministry, you can find him behind the wheel of our church bus, taking the Pacesetter’s on their adventures.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from St. Mary’s Catholic University in Puerto Rico; 2nd Lieutenant Commission in the U.S. Army; Master’s degree in Computer Science from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio; and Disciples Minister’s License in May 2004.

Roxana Torres, Children’s Minister
Email: roxitorres7@gmail.com
A native of Honduras, Central America, Roxana moved to Texas when she married Nelson Torres, our Associate Minister. One of her favorite activities is going out with her husband. They have three children, Alessandra, 22; Melanie, 15; and Nelson, 8. When you meet her, her bubbly personality will warm your heart!
Did you know? She loves Italian food, going to church, and talking with her children and her sister and brothers. It’s no surprise that this talented, crafty woman likes flower arranging, stenciling, home interior decorations, and coloring. Roxana also loves to collect tea sets and German porcelain dolls, shopping and walking.
She also loves to read Christian books that challenge her life. Her top authors are Charles Stanley, John Hagee, John MacArthur, Max Lucado, Derek Prince, Billy Graham, and Don Colbert. Her favorite book is The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. If she could meet anyone one day it would be Dr. Charles Stanley because his teachings have helped her grow spiritually.
Proudest achievement: Having a Christian family.
Ministry: Roxana has been fully serving the Lord and Central as the Children’s Minister since the fall of 2008. She received her Disciples Minister’s License in the summer of 2009. She credits her grandmother for raising her in the church, saying she was a faithful servant of the Lord. Roxana learned to love God and His presence in her life during her childhood years, and was baptized when she was 13 years old.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Autonomous University of Honduras.

Charles Flores, Choir Director
Email: charles.m.flores@gmail.com

A native of San Antonio, Charles grew up a Baptist, and became a Catholic while in college. He’s been Central’s Choir Director since January of 2009. He and his wife, Claudia, have two daughters and one son, and he loves to spend time with them. Naturally, his proudest achievement are his children. Dedicated to family, he wishes he could have had more time to spend with his grandfather.
Did you know? Charles is also a Music Teacher for the North Side School District. His hobbies include fishing, hunting, and reading. Some of his favorite authors and books are Allan Bloom; William Bennett; Closing of the American Mind; The Consolation of Philosophy by Boethius; The Poetics, and The Politics by Aristotle; The Republic by Allan Bloom; and Plato.
Besides books and his family, he’s a mad fan for everything Star Trek and Star Wars! He loves Star Trek I – VI, both Star Wars trilogies, The Mission, and anything with a good sound track. Charles once swam with Ralph the Pig at Aquarena Springs. We have no idea why he would do that, so you’ll have to ask him yourself!
Education: Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Music from The University of Texas at San Antonio, Judson High School graduate, and the U.S. Marine Corps.

George Gregory, Organist/Carillonist
Email: ggbellstx@aol.com

George was born in Monett, Missouri, and has also lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He’s been the organist and carillonist for Central Christian Church since 1958, where his mother was also a member. We think he stays so young by climbing the many steps up to the carillon several times a week, and satisfying his love of chocolate!
A multi-talented musician, George was a professor of Music at San Antonio College for 39 years, where he taught organ, ‘cello, harp, music theory, and Renaissance instruments. He’s the Director of the San Antonio Early Music Ensemble, and was in residence with the Sante Fe Desert Chorale and also The San Antonio Children’s Chorus. George received special recognition from the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America with a rarely bestowed honorary membership. The Berkeley Medal for “Distinguished service to the Carillon” was awarded to him in 1985 by the University of California at Berkeley. He has performed as a guest carillonneur throughout the United States and internationally. For over 20 years he was the harpsichordist/organist for the San Antonio Symphony. He was also a cellist for the Army at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. He proudly states that as long as he played his cello at Fort Sam, San Antonio was never invaded!
Did you know? A man with a quiet, wry sense of humor, George told us he was a Baptist before becoming a Christian. His favorite thing to do is play the carillon, so it’s not unusual that he considers practicing a fun activity. He also loves to travel. George’s favorite book is Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan.
Proudest achievement: Edited The Bulletin (a scholarly journal) for The Guild of Carillonneurs in North America for 16 annual issues.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree from Tulsa University, and Master of Music from the University of Texas at Austin, plus an additional 36 graduate hours of credit beyond the masters.

Kristie Acuna, Child Care Director
Email: cccdc007@yahoo.com

We have another San Antonio native in Kristie Acuna. She and her son, Jacob, have a lot of family still in the city. Spending time with them is her all-time favorite thing to do. She also likes to read “chick” romance novels written by Jane Green and Emily Weiner. If she could meet anyone one day, it would be novelist Nicholas Sparks. She also is a fan of Edgar Allan Poe, and Shakespeare.
Did you know? She loves cooking and baking, but prefers anything that her mom cooks, plus all Italian food. If you stop by the Child Care Center, you’ll see that she loves to decorate for all sorts of events and holidays. At least once a month, she and her friend, Sal from San Francisco, watch the movie Beaches together via the airwaves or something. Her family competes against each other while watching “Wheel of Fortune”. She’s also a “Jeopardy”, “NCIS”, and “Law and Order” fan. While she loves her son dearly, she admits that her dogs are her babies! She dresses them up, and even throws birthday parties for them, complete with guests, goody bags, and doggie cake! Pastor Thom said we may need to look at our employee list after he heard about that!
Proudest achievement: Her son, Jacob. She’s extremely proud of him, and says he’s an amazing child and a true blessing. She and Jacob attend a Catholic church, but also enjoy the children’s activities at Central.
Education: Attended Palo Alto College, received Child Care Director Certification and State License from the National Professionalism in Child Care. She is certified as a Professional Administrator National Credential, which qualified her to be awarded her Director Qualification license through Child Care Licensing. She also attends various seminars and classes throughout the year to keep her training current.

Amber Cerna, Assistant Child Care Director
Amber has been with our Child Care since 2004. She’s a single mother of a precious baby girl. She says she is blessed with a small, loving family, consisting of her daughter, mother, father, sister, and niece. She’s a strong believer in prayer, and knows that God has showed His strength with her and her family on many occasions. Speaking of family, they love to do things together, even if it’s just garage sale hopping. Her favorite foods are home-cooked baked chicken and white rice and mixed veggies with cheese.
Did you know? Her favorite hobby is shopping! She loves things on sale, and having a daughter just gives her another reason to shop! She likes to watch drama and reality shows like “Operation Repo”, “Who’s Wedding Is It Anyway?”, and “Parking Wars”. If she could meet one person one day, it would be LL Cool J because she thinks he’s so very attractive and handsome!
Education: Amber is currently enrolled at San Antonio College, and is planning on studying either Nursing or Accounting.
Jennifer Maille, Bookkeeper/Secretary
Email: jennRH4@gmail.com, jennifer@cccsa.org

Jennifer and her husband, Mike, have three children, Philip, Natalie, and Thomas. She loves organization, and likes making Excel sheets for her finances and “to do” lists. Yes, she said this is one of her hobbies! She also likes to cook and fold towels, and has a thing for rulers. Sadly, the church didn’t know any of this when they hired her in June of 2007, but we keep her anyway because she’s good with numbers. She does have a sense of humor though, as do her kids. When called to dinner one night, her oldest son, Philip, said, “We’re not home. Leave a message!”
Did you know? Jennifer grew up a Baptist in the Austin/Pflugerville area. She says she’s an accidental gardener, meaning she accidentally keeps most of her plants alive, and accidentally kills the rest. Her favorite things are watching movies, wearing long, striped socks, steam cleaning her carpets, going to home improvement centers, and paying bills. She’s a fan of the TV shows “Big Bang Theory”, “18 Kids and Counting”, and “John & Kate Plus 8”. Jennifer loves to read mostly non-fiction books because she’s nosey, she said. Some of her preferred topics are the Kennedy’s, Princess Diana, and 9-11 survivors. Her favorite foods are ice tea, Mexican, and anything made with cheddar cheese. Her husband jokes that if she makes three quick left turns in her car she’ll get motion sickness.
If she could meet anyone one day, it would be her great-grandparents and other family members who passed on before she was born. She’s heard neat stories about them, and would like to know more about her family history.
Proudest achievement: She admits she was a strange child because she liked to read and practice her flute instead of playing outside. She was a good student, never caused problems, and never kept her parents up at night. But she’s proud that her parents didn’t have to worry about her, and she knows they are proud of her, too.
Published works: Jennifer keeps an on-line blog about her children on her family’s website.
Education: Studied three years at Czech Technical University in Prague for Civil Engineering; Accounting Degree from Concordia University in Austin.
Khampheng Chanthadara, Head Custodian

Khampheng has a unique history. Hailing from Laos, Khampheng was a Colonel in the Laos Military, working for the American C.I.A. during the Vietnam War. Today, he still lobbies Congress for benefits promised to the Laotian soldiers many years ago. He and his family fled Laos as refugees over 30 years ago, and were adopted by Central Christian Church, where he has worked since then. Khampheng is divorced and has five children. He lives with his youngest daughter, and her three daughters.
Did you know? He loves gardening, playing cards, cooking and watching world news. His favorite entertainments are wrestling and western movies. He loves Laotian food, and reading the Laos newspaper. If he could meet anyone one day, it would be his parents who passed away. He grew up Buddhist, but is now a Christian.
Proudest achievements: Bringing his family away from the Vietnam War, and working for the American C.I.A. His daughter adds that he is a great father and grandfather, and raised five kids alone.

Jacob Beltran, Child Care Custodian
Born and raised in San Antonio, Jacob has a wife, Crystal, and four children, five brothers, his parents, and numerous nieces and nephews in the city. He loves working, being with his family and reading stories to his kids. Crystal is also our Sunday morning nursery attendant. His proudest achievement is being a father and keeping his head straight when times get tough.
Did you know? He loves being outdoors, listening to country music, and watching Tyler Perry movies, “Cops”, “Man vs. Wild”, "Meet the Browns", and the animated movie Up. Nothing tops a home cooked meal for Jacob, but he does like to eat at Taco Bell, Church’s, and Burger King. One day, he would like to meet a real genie!
Education: A hard worker, Jacob has some high school but dropped out to help his family.
