Central Christian Church was established in San Antonio in 1883 in a small wooden building on Camden street, now the site of the church's parking lot. It was relocated in 1903 to its present location and rebuilt in brick with the four columns as they are today representing the four gospel writers and with the present stained glass windows. It did not have air conditioning, or many of the more modern amenities. In 1948 construction of a new building at the site was started with air conditioning, and other improvements and dedicated in 1950. During this period, church services were held in Temple Beth-El, right behind our current location. Other area Christian churches provided facilities for baptisms.

Pictured to the right is the Texas Historical Commission plaque located in front of the church at 720 North Main in San Antonio.
The plaque reads:

Central Christian Church
Evangelist David Pennington came to San Antonio in 1883 and organized this Christian (Disciples of Christ) congregation. He held worship services in a variety of borrowed facilities until a sanctuary was constructed at this site in 1884. Central Christian Church was established during a period of great growth in San Antonio due to the coming of the railroad in 1877, and church membership grew as well. Larger church facilities were built in 1903 under the leadership of the Rev. Homer Wilson. The current building was dedicated in 1950, when Dr. Floyd Allen Bash was minister.

During the pastorate of the Rev. Hugh McClelland, Central Christian Church led in the establishment of the Mexican Christian Institute (now Inman Christian Center) to minister to refugees fleeing from the revolution in Mexico and to others in the southwest section of the city. The congregation also led in organizing a Disciples of Christ Church for Spanish-speaking people in San Antonio. Central Christian was the first church in the city to broadcast worship services over radio (1924) and the first to air services on television (1954).

For over 100 years, Central Christian Church has provided significant service and leadership to San Antonio.
A notable addition was the 47-bell carillon made in 1953 as a gift from the Lester Nordan family. It is the only true belled carillon in the city of San Antonio. In 1986 the 48th bell (low E-flat) was added to the carillon by Mrs. Nordan in memory of her husband Lester, who died in 1969. (Also see The Nordan Memorial Carillon on the Worship/Music page.
