Communion
What Does Communion Mean?

We can understand communion by simply dissecting the word itself. It can be understood as “communing” with God. This would be the idea that you are in God’s presence and do this action with him. Another way to see it is as “communication”. As we eat the bread and drink the juice we are communicating our love to God as we receive love from him. A further way of seeing meaning in the name is to think of it as “coming into union” with God.
Sharing the elements brings us into oneness with God.
In Matthew 28:20 Jesus says, “I am with you always,
to the very end of the age.
Sharing in communion says we are part of God’s family.
The story of communion is found in the Gospels as well as in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians in chapter 11 verses 23-26. Matthew tells the story in chapter 26 verses 26-29. In each case we see Jesus and his followers eating bread and drinking wine or juice. We are told that the bread is a symbol of Jesus’ body and the juice is a symbol of Jesus’ blood. When Jesus was arrested he was beaten and tortured in many ways. His body was broken and his blood was shed. The bread and the juice are symbols and reminders of this.
When we share in communion we are remembering what Jesus did for us on the cross. He died so that the brokenness of our relationship with God could be restored. He took our sins upon himself and paid the price for our separation from God. Jesus is God himself in human form. God wants to be in relationship with us. The sin that is preventing this relationship has to be removed. God came to remove it himself in Jesus Christ. Communion reminds us of the suffering he went through. You can read about it in Mark 15.

But communion is not just about Jesus being dead. He rose from the grave and triumphed over sin, evil, Hell, and death! Communion is about remembering that Jesus is alive! It is not just a funeral for Jesus repeated each time we gather at the table. Communion is about celebrating that he is alive and with us each time we break the bread and pour the cup. In Matthew 28:20 Jesus says,
“I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Communion is a celebration of his constant presence.
The Greek word often used for communion is Eucharist. It means “thanksgiving”. Communion is about thanking God for all he has done for us. We sometimes also call this “the Lord’s Supper”. This again helps us to remember that Jesus is here with us in the breaking of bread and drinking of juice. In fact, a major part of communion is about remembering. Jesus said in several of the communion passages in the Bible that we are to “do this in remembrance” of him.

Another aspect of communion is that it is about being part of Christ’s Body, the Church. Paul tells us, “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is part of it.” (1 Corinthians 12: 27) When we celebrate communion together we are declaring that we are part of Christ’s Body throughout the whole world. We are connected with every other Christian from the first century to today and into the future. Sharing in communion says we are part of God’s family.
