Baptism
In one of Paul’s other letters he tells us of another way to look at baptism. Romans 6:3-4 describes baptism as being a symbol of Jesus death, burial and resurrection. Jesus died on the cross and was buried. When we are laid under the water it is like being laid into a grave like he was. When we are raised up out of the water it is like Jesus being raised from death through his resurrection. We are being raised to new life.

In John 3 Jesus told a man named Nicodemas that becoming Christian is like being “born again”. Baptism is a way of symbolizing being born again. We go down into the waters as the old person we were before we gave ourselves to Christ. We come up out of the water as though we have been born all over again.

2010 Baptisms
Baptism is the symbol that we are coming
into right relationship with God.

Baptism is a way of symbolizing being born again.
It means you are joining Jesus in the wonderful
relationship he wants to have with you.
What is Baptism?

Baptism is a wonderful symbol of new life. The Apostle Paul wrote a beautiful description of this new life in 2 Corinthians 5:17. He says, “If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come.” Baptism is the symbol of this new creation that we become when we give our lives to Jesus and become Christians.

Jesus himself was baptized. We can read about it in several places, such as in Matthew 3:13-17. Jesus says that he is being baptized “to fulfill all righteousness.” Righteousness means to be in right relationship.
When we baptize at Central it is by immersion. We have a large, wonderful baptistry tank that is filled with water about waist deep. That depth of course depends on how tall you are. It’s in the front of the sanctuary behind the communion table and organ.

The person being baptized will enter the tank with another person, usually a pastor. The pastor will say something like, “Upon your confession of faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

The person being baptized will then be lowered under the water and raised back up again. They are usually only held under for ten or fifteen minutes. We’ve got to make sure all those sins are washed away! Just kidding! You’ll only be under water for a second or two. Most baptisms will usually be held within a couple of weeks after a person makes their confession of faith.
We do accept people into membership who have been baptized as infants and later confirmed. If that form of baptism has meaning for a person then we respect that.

Baptism is a wonderful celebration in a person’s life. It is also a great joy for the church. It means you are joining Jesus in the wonderful relationship he wants to have with you. If you’ve not yet been baptized, we’d like to encourage you to participate in this wonderful symbol of new life. Let us fill the tank for you!
